Running a short-term rental in Kansas City isn't just about five-star reviews, occupancy rates, and remembering to order more toilet paper.

It's also about policy, politics, and protecting your right to operate.

That's why the Kansas City Short Term Rental Alliance exists.

KCSTRA was formed in 2023 when proposed regulations threatened local STR owners and their businesses. Since then, our mission has remained pretty simple: pay attention, show up, and make sure responsible STR owners have a voice when decisions are being made that affect them.

Because those decisions are being made—with or without us in the room.

We're Pro-STR. We're Also Pro-Responsibility.

We believe property owners should have the right to responsibly operate short-term rentals. We also believe legal, well-managed STRs are good for Kansas City—bringing visitors into our neighborhoods, supporting local businesses, creating jobs, and contributing to the city's tourism economy.

That doesn't mean we're anti-regulation.

It means we're against bad regulation—policy created without input from the people who actually understand this industry or rules that punish responsible operators while doing little to solve the problems they're supposedly designed to address.

And when those conversations happen, KCSTRA intends to be at the table.

So Why a Blog?

Because you shouldn't need to read a 47-page ordinance to figure out whether City Hall just did something that affects your business. We'll keep you informed about legislation, regulations, taxes, licensing, advocacy efforts, and other issues affecting STRs across the Kansas City metro.

We'll also talk about the business itself—the good, the bad, the ridiculous, and the occasional "you can't make this stuff up".

Expect perspectives from owners, operators, attorneys, vendors, industry professionals, and other people who actually have some skin in the game. Sometimes we'll educate. Sometimes we'll advocate. Sometimes we'll ruffle a few feathers. And sometimes we'll just tell a good story.
